The Chronicle Herald has a nice article today that some of you might enjoy.
The following excerpt is from the article:
In the early hours of Dec. 8, 1863, an act of piracy brought the war even closer.
Sixteen passengers who had boarded the steamer Chesapeake at New York were actually Confederates in disguise; and before the ship could reach its destination of Portland, Maine, they struck. In the struggle to gain control of the ship, the pirates, led by John C. Braine, shot and killed the second engineer, Orin Schaffer, and seriously wounded two others; and after Schaffer’s body had been tossed overboard, Captain Isaac Willett and all but a few crewmembers were ordered into a small boat. The Chesapeake then set course for Nova Scotia.
