I've been exploring the world of free audio books this summer. You can read a few of my experiences here. Anyway, I discovered The Shirley Letters from California Mines in 1851-52 at Librivox.

The Shirley Letters are a series of letters from Mrs. Louise Amelia Knapp Smith Clappe to her sister in Massachusetts. She writes of her experiences with her husband in the gold fields of California. You can read more about Mrs. Clappe here:

Anyway, if any of you are like me and spend way too much time in the car then you might enjoy this as an audio book. She is an interesting writer.
