Map of Battle of Gettysburg with good Order of Battle?

mjohnson's picture

Has anyone seen a really good map of the Battle of Gettysburg with unit placement and general movement down to the brigade level? Kind of a decent order of battle drawn out on a map?

The maps at Wikipedia are decent at the Corps level. But I'd liek a bit more detail of the units.

Some of the old maps are pretty good as well. And I'm thinking is as good as it is going to get.

But I didn't know if anyone had taken advantage of the technology and ability of todays mapping technology to do something truely new and revolutionary? What about other battle sites? Anyone seen any really nice use of online maps?

This is gonna sound kinda

This is gonna sound kinda out in left field but .......how artistic are you? because If you think you could make your own map with visual aid for unit location I have an Idea if you cant find what you are looking for.....
The game Sid meiers "Gettysburg!" has all the individual units on the field, with historic scenarios....you could print out screen shots double check positions with history texts and then using them create your own map....labor intensive but one possibility....Like I said just an idea from out in left field...

Oh how interesting!

Is there a way to play it through historically? I was thinking it was just a game. But if it plays through and is accurate enough then it could be captured and then played back as a movie. Speed up the time elapse and add some time stamps. Cool idea!

I might need to do some shopping now. Hmmm,

The problem may be that I would be violating copyright and trademarks if I share it out to others.

outside the box then......

So apparently I waasent out in left field ,, I was thinking outside the box....but I was going for the individual units. they have start point of the historical battles like round top and the peach orchard and then you start moving them about, then it gets crazy......I once won pickets charge, I split my forces and concentrated on the bend in the fishhook thus breaking through and coming to the copse of trees on the right with some frontal and a slight break through to the left I was able to isolate the union left, eventually some union units left the field in retreat,,,and I could consolidate my forces again in the middle well behind the stone wall...I digress once again,,,,they list the individula units so at round top theres us the fourth texas the second texas, the 44th alabama and maybe the 4th ala. vs. the 20th maine,,,and whatever ny and mich groups....but they list em all by state and number.
So I was thinking you could just take screen shots of each opening phase and then impose them on another more vague map... or create your own using the shots as a guide...no infringement!

I understand

I see what you are saying about the start points. How many start points are there? 4 or 5 I'm guessing?

Morning of July 1
Morning of July 2
Afternoon of July 2
Morning of July 3

Or something like that? I guess I will have to think about this some more. I was thinking of many more points in the day.

Obviously, we don't have a timeline to the minute of each disposition of each unit but from hour to hour could be estimated I think. I thought it would be cool to see a video of the map of the battlefield where you could pause the video at any point and see the disposition of the combatants.

Someday when I am old and have the time I'd like to do this. Would be so cool!
