Howdy,
The link takes you to the Society of Civil War Surgeons web page. As a member of said society for 9 years I feel I have a right to impart a little negativity here. By being a member you recieve 4 "newsletters" a year dealing with CW medicine, which admittedly did have some pretty great content. The website used to have a forum where you could post questions to your fellow "surgeons". About a year ago it began getting heavily spammed by viagra dealers etc. Last I checked (about 4 months ago) they hadn't even cleared the hundreds of spam posts. The main drive of the society now seems to be getting people to attend the annual convention. If you factor in travel expense it comes to about $1000.00 for a couple. I can find better uses for my $1000. For these reasons I chose not to re-new my subscription to the society. That's a shame really, though I sympathize. I change the policy for new accounts here last summer. When someone registers at MaineMilitia.com they used to get an email and if they received the email okay then their membership for this site was automatically approved. I decided to turn that off because so many new accounts were being created and never authenticated. Now I manually approve all new accounts because I was afraid that at some point someone would start using those never-used-accounts to SPAM this site.
It's a big hassle and should be more illegal then it is now. Flogging, public caning, an occasional hanging maybe and I'm sure that the problem of SPAM would slow down. I also have no objection to nuking Nigeria or any select Viagra factory either. :)
