145th Gettysburg

MaineMan 1862's picture

Hi Everyone,
I haven't been on in a while, with school and all. Now I have a chance to write. I hope everyone is doing well and looking forward to the spring and summer campaign.
I am planning on going to the event. This would be my first national one and it looks really good. I just have to wait and see what my car holds. It's been having problems. But it will get fixed.
If things don't work out, maybe I could join someone from the 3rd who is going down? Just a thought.
I have been saving up more money for my new coat and trousers. Hopefully I will be able to order them soon.
Anyways, just wanted to let you know that I'm planning on going. It looks like we will have a good time and be able to celebrate and honor the brave men who fought on both sides at the turning point of the war.

Very Sincerely and Respectfully,
Private Jared Johnson
Company A, 3rd Maine Regiment of Volunteer Infantry

Plan on a ride share

Hey Jared,

Hope school is going okay for you and you guys haven't racked up too many snow days yet!

I would highly recommend finding someone to ride with. Especially someone who you get along well with as it is a long drive. Here is why I recommend this:

  • It's just fun!
  • Sharing drive time can help relieve the monotony of the road.
  • Gas prices, need I say more?
  • Someone to share the anticipation with. This can not be overstated but I have found that the anticipation of the event is sometimes as great as the event itself.
  • Planning on sharing tent and mess can reduce the amount of gear you pack in and more importantly reduce the amount you pack out.
  • It's just plain fun to travel with a great group!
  • You will be exhausted on Sunday afternoon and need to share drive time on trip home.
  • Swapping tales on the drive home helps embed then experience.
  • Did I mention it's more fun?

Seriously, hook up with a couple of other people. The trip is so much better! If you can work out the planning with everyone then plan on going a day early or stay a day late and site see. Splitting a motel room wont cost too much and having the time to actually walk the battlefield makes it so much better. If you've never been then it's a must. I highly recommend going a day early. It adds to the excitement of the anticipation.

I also enjoy a Sunday night motel somewhere. It makes the Monday drive home so much more pleasant.

Above all, have fun!
