I'm not a regular reader of Cabin Country so I can't say I know this gentleman in any way except this one article. But today, Dyke Hendrickson posted a new article entitled New hero: Joshua Chamberlain. It's kind of an odd read from an historical perspective. I wonder if Mr. Hendrickson has any idea what he is talking about. Still, a very nice tribute none-the-less.
Anyone read his stuff more than I have an opinion?

We have that sense when he
We have that sense when he refers to Chamberlin repulsing "Picketts charge" that he isnt a great fact checker. sort of the kind of generalist history you hear from kids from time to time....like the war was about slavery and abraham Lincoln freed the slaves.....hurrah for the glorious union, who won all the four battles that were fought in the war, antietiam gettysburg Vicksburg and Appomattox.....No offense to the union but havent we all heard that kind of thing from time to time..........
But all and all a decent tribute to a man despite the ins and outs of historical debate was a hellava guy.

Or that he mixed up the stories
That what I felt also Mike. Or that he had a need to be brief and just told the parts of the stories that people would get and the true story is lost in the translation. As in the approach to the Rose Farm was grueling and long but the last rush to take Little Round Top was the real heart breaker for the Confederates and oh yah, Picket's Charge! You heard of that, right?
Oh and you forgot one Union victory, the Monitor and the Virginia? We of course won that too! So that's 5 battles! Woot!
Ha ha ha, I am of course kidding. And I know Mike knows I am kidding. But it does seem that the general populous believes it doesn't it?

DONT YOU MEAN THE
DONT YOU MEAN THE MERRIMACK!!!!!!!!!
I was reading the other day (yes I know, and there wereent many pictures either) but I cant remember what, about some historian who thinks its better to keep refering to the battle of the Monitor and the Virginia as the Monitor and the merrimack even though it was renamed and really from the waterline up was a totaly new ship, because it might confuse the public or some such rot.....
People just dont know where they come from do they?

Old debate
Why dumb us down to the lowest common denominator?
On the one hand, I can understand that not everyone is going to know every detail about the action and history of the two vessels. That on one level I expect people to know that two ships made of iron and not using sails fought each other to a draw during the American Civil War and marked a change in how naval ships would develop in the future.
Good basic understanding of the important points of the historical moment.
After that, if they are going to know anything else then give them everything and hope that something sticks! Confused by the name change? Frankly, the people who will be confused by the name change will have a tough time with my description of the "good basic understanding of the important points of the historical moment."
Tell it right or you're telling it wrong. And never let the truth get in the way of a good story!

Sounds like he was schooled
Sounds like he went to Mt.View High School in the 80's when they were using the book "Our Maine Heritage". I have a copy of it if one would like to take a view at some encampment. With passages like, Gen. Lee took Washington and Philaphia before the Federal Army stopped him at Gettysburg with brigades led by Joshua Chamberlain under Gen.Stonewall Jackson. With the conclusion of the War at Gettysburg, Lincoln freed the slaves with the (and it was either the Proclaimation Emanication or Gettysburg Address). It has been a while since I opened the book but guarantee it'll make you say...."you've got a be kidding!....this wasn't really used at a High School?.....was it?????" lol

2nd Vol
I knew there was a second volume but never bothered with it. The thing that bought my blood to a boil was that it was alledgingly proofread by several teachers for errors.....And mine was the 5th edition. Heed the warning, do not use any of the photographes without permission! Plagierism is terrible thing!
