Billy Boy

Hello all,

With Christmas fast approaching there is a new book on the market about Maine in the Civil War. "Billy Boy" By Mary Jean Flahive just launched this past weekend and is about Pvt. William Laird of the 17th Maine. I had the opportunity of editing this book for Mary to help her with the Civil War history and it is a fantastic read. It is a historical fiction based on the actual events of Maine's only execution by Court Marshal. I definatly suggest it as a stocking stuffer for any Civil War buff.

As a side note, I will be supporting Mary at a book signing on Presidents day in February 25 at LL Bean in Freeport. Essentially I will be in uniform promoting the book along with the hobby. This is an excellent opportunity to support Civil War Literature here in Maine. If you would like to attend just drop me an email.

Have a Merry Christmas!

Best,
Sgt. Matthew Bray

Thanks for the response!

Pvt. Cylik They told me Presidents day the 25... so obviously these authors and book editors are not calender people. It is on Presidents day. So I will email them to confirm everything and let you know at the January Meeting if it is not Presidents day. Sorry for the mix up!

Capt. Cotton: Sir the Private was executed at Fort Preble in Portland harbor. It is an amazing piece of Maine history that is little known. Actually President Lincoln sent his full pardon to the commanding officer at the Fort however it was lost in telegram during the draft riots in NYC and its arrival was unfortunately too late.

I am no ghost expert however I know we have some on this board and this I would think would be a prime ghost type of thing... soldier, wrongfully executed... maybe??

Thanks again!

tradition revealled

I have relayed the Urban Ledgeon several times about he young man who was executed in Berwick. It turns out that there was some truth to the tale.
Only it was in Cape Elizabeth and not Berwick and it was the President and not the Governor. Mystery resolved. Thanks Sgt Bray.
