Pernicious partisian punch on portland pedestrian Pathway, (i.e. the railroas robbery AAR)

Seamus's picture

So it came one Sat morning I saddled up and met with my Rangers and we rode.......yadaydayda.....
ok stright skinny we all got there around the 8am time frame....and found MattBray and his father talking to Tom and dave laiche, matt was glad to see me as I had his pants....Matt had flown in around midnight on the cusp od sat morning and I picked up his trousers from his girlfriend.....but as we began to arrive the train was behind us...lesson to be learned we can get there no so much early...as we were getting ready to go down to the site Robbie stubbins and his girlfriend lindsey arrive...so our numbers swell by one and a half as lindsey hasent been checked out on the weapon yet...she becomes our desiginated dead/wounded
but we were all wondering where was Steve henry?
well noone really wants to hear aboout setting up a tent and how frightfully hard the ground is donw at the end of the tarcks but we couldnt have had a better day for an event as we did on SAt. three times we have done this and its been beutiful weather every time...
Basic rundown is this train comes down the tracks we attack shorts exchanged steve is wounded or dead matt was captured and I shot his father either two or three times as I flanked down the holes.....
the last train we were all going to take hits on the rebel side of things but rumor of channel 13 caused us not to take the slapstick route....but a plan was hatched on the union side of things, as we advanced matts father flanked the sid eof the train and poped up on us and then launched a suicidal charge on our forces...we ran back out of surprise and a desire to get distance from the guns and then thought why are we running theres only two.....they both died valiently for the cause.....
but theeres more to this train than the shootem up aspect of things....the civilians onboard the train were very interactive with the passengers, and Deb Bergeron was an excellent impromto nurse....a few children were scared and my wife reported only one "well, this is highly inappropiate..." and as the average ridership for one day is about 100 passengers thats only a one percent disapproval rating.....
some cards were handed out and the last train was given a picture opp with all of us....
cant wait for the next one, september first........

Better Late Than Never

Well when setting one's alarm one much be sure it is set for ante meridian and not post meridian!
But I arrived well in time of the first ride. So glad they were able to get the old iron horse steaming!
If anyone complained, it wasnt to me or any of the MNGRR folks. Having to prewarn parents about the upcoming melodrama seemed to make things go over better. One little tyke was anxiously asking his father if they were going to die!

We must get some more Union to do this, I'm getting too old for multiple hits off of a train! Even scared myself on one occasion! Them rails is HARD! But it has always been a nice event for a good cause.
I am hoping the next trip is well after "Sept. Storm" in Maryland, so we can actually get a bigger Union contingent.

Until the next time, Keep your powder dry!

It's always good to have a back up

If anything can drag this old Missouri Border Ruffian out of retirement, it's a good old fashioned Train Robbery! I had a great time and that last shootout was the best! All of us had fired our rifles and were empty when the two Yankees surprised us...we backed off wondering whether it was better to stand and die, or run away to fight another day...when Tom and I both remembered we were packing an extra six rounds each in our side arms....so we blazed away, figuring two rounds to twelve...we may have a slight advantage....and when the smoke cleared, the Yankees was down and the Rebs was still a-standin'.

I'm betting they don't let that happen again!

Seamus...My offer still goes for that coach gun! Thanks again for putting together one of the most exciting and enjoyable events in Maine Reenacting!

"I am a border-ruffian from the State of Missouri. I am a Maine Yankee by adoption. In me you have Missouri morals and Maine culture; this, my friends, is the combination which makes the perfect man." (A shameless misquote from the great Sam Clemens...

I volunteer my Yankee husband for the next one!

Sorry we missed it - but the Brits were getting all rambunctious up at Ft.Carillion (Ft. Ti) they wanted their last hurrah before next years recreation of the Black Watch slaughter...Ding Dong the Brits are dead! Our French brethren needed re inforcements up there.
I would love nothing better than to dress up my husband as a blue bellie & take crack shots at him as he put me through the ringer with the Waldoboro parade!
I love my husband - I really do! - but this sounds like great fun!
Cant wait to see ya'll at Groton. :)

Been working the entire weekends now and can only get a select few off. Good to hear from Teddy. Any chance of bringing our flag to Groton?

Maybe its a new take on the

Maybe its a new take on the old coffee and tobaco trade on the rappahannock.
after we fire a few shots we realize the futility of war and then exchange shorts, sing kumbyah with the passengers and have a group hug.....
hers a little side note to my insanity.... at the Winslow Parade were standing waiting for the parade to move and this voice from the line of spectators says "hey are you the guys from the train?" apparently this guy and his family were on the four oclock photo opp express....so fellows theres some proof of exposure!
but no exchanging of shorts......
