It was recently reported that a bowhead whale caught off the Alaskan coast last month had a 130 year old harpoon head embedded in it. Embedded deep under the whales blubber was a 3 1/2-inch arrow-shaped projectile that was estimated by researchers to be between 115 and 130 years old. They believe it is from a bomb lance, a heavy shoulder fired weapon, that may have been made in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
Oh the tale that whale could tell!
I wonder if it recalls the attack that left the spear head in it's body? Or if the remnant caused any pain or discomfort 'til the end of it's life?
I wonder about how a whale considers the passage of time? My grand-parents and great-grand-parents would talk about the first automobile, or airplane or phone call they ever made. Or the passing of or participation in war. That's how we humans measure time these days. By the technical or intimate milestones that we experience. For my short life so far it is the Challenger Accident, the World Wide Web, the Iraq Invasion of Kuwait, the massacre of September 11, 2001 and the birth of my daughter.
But this grand creature of the deep has been wandering in an endless cycle that took it from the equator to the pole on an annual rotation over a hundred years old.
I thought this was interesting and wanted to be sure others saw it as well. Enjoy!
