Time Capsule beneath the Cressey and Kora buildings

mjohnson's picture

I was watching WGME TV-13 tonight and they reported that the contractors taking down the Cressey and Kora buildings on Lisbon Street following the fire last week are to be looking for a time capsule from 1865.

I can find no details online at this time but I thought I would share what I heard in case any of you have anything to add? The article reports that the buildings were built in the 1890's so I am not sure if I heard wrong, if the time capsule is from an earlier construction and was just buried, or if the anchor mispoke on TV news.

Should be very interesting to find out what is inside in any case.

My Favorite Cartoon!

The singing frog cartoon is a classic!
My company headquarters office is next to the buildings being torn down (North Country Associates) and I was there this morning dropping off stuff and hung around for a few minutes watching the demoliton. If there is a time capsule, they're not looking for it very carefully...there is nothing but a mountain of rubble where the buildings used to be and they're not being very gentle when it comes to ripping down the walls. If they find it, I hope it was protected from the fire; it should be pretty interesting what they find.

Can't find a reference online

I've been looking but I can't find a reference on any of the local news sites to the time capsule. Maybe I was dreaming it or something.

One description I read was that many of the interior floors had collapsed and sandwhiched into the basement, leaving just the outer walls as a hull with no interior support holding them together. Hence the rush to get them torn down before they fell down.

Ahhhhhh the classic "pancake

Ahhhhhh the classic "pancake collapse" probally went one at a time or else the resulting air pressure would have blown out a wall, but then again they were old buildings built when they built things to last....question is if there is a time capsule what exactly did they use? and if its buried then it would have survived the fire but will it survive the demolition? but if done right it might be discovered if they start building, thats when they find stuff like time capsules, old cemetaries, former foundations and viking longships.........

Mike,
I believe that it is a masonic conor stone depository which they seek. It was placed in the northeast conor of the Kora building and is most likely now under the paved side walk as things have changed since 1890. Just a guess.
