Confederate flag put on display at Maine State Museum

July 14, 2006

AUGUSTA, Maine --A Confederate flag from the Civil War that was brought to Maine by a Union drummer boy has been put on display at the Maine State Museum.

The small handmade flag is the only Confederate flag in the state's collection of 112 Civil War banners, said museum curator Laurie LaBar. It is important because it is a rare example of a personal "trophy" that was brought home from war, she said.

The flag is a version of the Confederate national flag known as the Stars and Bars. It has three horizontal red and white stripes and a blue field in one corner with 11 white stars in it.

A handwritten note that accompanies the flag says that Daniel Marston, who was 13 and from the western Maine town of Phillips, found it near Fort Clinch in Florida when Union troops took over the island housing the fort in 1862.

9th Maine

It doesn't surprize me that it was the 9th Maine in Fort Clinch. The 29th and 30th GVI were sent to repel the Federal invaders in October 1862. They (Georgian Units)entered Jacksonville but the invaders left as quickly as they came, with the skirmishers of the 30th GVI practically on thier heels as their boats left the shores.

Co. A of the 29th GVI would eventually engage the 9th Maine on Johnson Island in 1863 and fire upon their flank from Battery Gregg during the assault on Battery Wagner.

This makes the 4th Confederate Flag in Maine. Anyone interest in getting together as a group to view this flag in uniform? Maybe lunch afterwards.

A trip to the museum might be a good outing and exposure for the groups going. Now, if schedules match...
