at one time at an event a conversation about Paintball emerged. that some of us reenactors could get togeather for a friendly game of paintball, dressed in approiate paintball attire(jeans or cammo)
and use civil war tactics and whatnot....to get an idea about hit ratio and masses volley fire...or just ram around like we are fighting a small arms skirmish modern style. if anyone still have that hankering in a non unit sanctioned manner e-mail me.

If we were going to use civil war tactics we mine as well wear our uniforms:)... oh.. don't worry in case you didn't know paint balls are soap based they wash out of any martial, especially wool. think bout that one!

uniforms
How about this for uniforms. Confederate wear the grey (night) camo and Federals wear the blue (SWAT) camos. I still have a paintball stain on my cartridge box from 15 years ago, so I am not too thrill with using our actual uniforms.
Mike I am game for this. Too bad they don't make paint swords for slashing and stabbing. I could load a couple dozen balls in the cannons and see the effects of canister. That's gonna hurt! Maybe we can bait some deer and moose instead. We'd probably get the Darwin Award when the news reports several reenactors getting killed by a P.O'ed bull moose who was hit by paintballs.
Anyhow count me in!

all i was thinking was some
all i was thinking was some kind of colored armbands.....I have a cousin who lives in new hamster who is big into paintball and they do a civil war style skirmish from time to time and they load one ball at a time by dropping it down the muzzle. it works.
so far we have rebs a jumping but how about the boys in blue?
Remember this is not some kind of unit thing, just a guy offering us a chance to get togeather with the goal to blow off some stem and have a good time in a non- wool enviroment..maybe cook out after..

paint ball
Sweet Jesus, Mary & Joseph!
I was wandering through my portal into the vast electronic wasteland, and lo and behold came upon an obscure ESPN channel I actually was witnessing PROFESSIONAL PAINTBALL! It is played on a football type field and incorporates capture the flag type rules. Last man unpainted wins. FOr all you '42 smoothie shooters, the standard paintball is roughly .69 calibre.

This is a pretty interesting
This is a pretty interesting off topic thread.
Civil War paint ball...how about we include some civil war water balloon batteries, enfield water guns, civil war laser tag?
I used to be a paint ball tournament referee. That went on for several months. Nothing of the sport spells civil war though. I did know one joe who came in one day wearing his union sack coat. (He couldn't fit pads on his arms because of it). He left the tournament with a few bruises. His coat, three years later, has three different colored stains. Huzzah!
I wouldn't wear my uniform if we got together though. The uniform is a symbol of honor and when I wear it, it is showing respect for what the uniform stands for.
Mike, the arm bands are a cheap and good idea...but we'd need a fair share of pads and face masks for safety. Believe me, even being hit from a distance, you would want a pad there.
Some other advice. With my experience in paint balling, I quickly found that paint ball rifles are a little more accurate than your enfield or Springfield.
Realistically civil war tactics wouldn't be too bright unless the two battle lines were pretty separated. Other wise everyone will take a hit in less than eight seconds.
Sorry, Mike, count me out of that volley fire. Being hit by a volley of paint balls would turn someone into a human bruise.
I'm game as long as we use the accepted paint ball tactics of 20th century combat. And it may be the only time many of you see me on the field wearing modern clothes

I'm going to be a little
I'm going to be a little careful with this subject in case we have visitors to this board. I don't want to give an impression that paintballing is a part of reenacting.
I wouldn't mind getting together not for a reenactment or unit event to paint ball but more like on a day off or get together.
There were some units that I met in Texas and elsewhere that would do late 19th century cowboy shoots while in uniform or as a unit event. What a mess! It confused the public to say the least. I feel that our civil war uniforms, gear, and impressions should not stray from period portrayals and their meanings. But I think it is a good idea for us to get together informally to do other things. Paint ball is a lot of fun.
Mike, what you said earlier about shooting paintballs by volley gave me another idea...
It was either one or two years ago (not sure which) the 15th got together for an afternoon to do some live firing. What was neat was that we were able to fire by company and hear what it really sounded like in the civil war. (On a much smaller scale.) It sounded much different from the harmless volleys at reenactments.
But even then, we had but a four or five soldiers at that event.
This is kind of off the earlier subject but I was thinking that we could have as many members of Maine units as possible get together for a live firing it would be a fine idea for as many reenactors as possible to partipate in a private live firing day event. In uniform, yanks and rebs both. Before the event we could post targets on the trees or wherever.
What do you guys think? I understand that the 29th Georgia regularly gets together for civil war live firing. And I know at least one of the 29th's soldiers makes his own balls. It would have to have a pretty remote location and safety precautions addressed.
Anyway, that idea just came to me. I think it would be a great way for all of us, yanks and rebs alike to have a nonpublic get together without the farb.

Read Carefully
Zac, At no Time was paintball at a reenactment or event suggested. thats why its in the off topic, chatter threadspace.
this was suggested as a way to get togeather without the trappings of the hobby. and several times I have mentioned this is a NON-UNIT gathering....we could just as well pick teams with whoever showed.
possible cook-out. relax. sometime in the future there might be some kind of live fire event.

I'm in
I have no gear but have always wanted to try it. So I'm in.
Zac, As many times as I've misunderstood one of your posts, I can nderstand misunderstanding this one. :)
It's a fun idea. Frankly, I see it being more traditional paintball then every coming close to CW. And that's okay by me. Whatever, it's about the fun. And this doesn't require the authenticity standards. Not that I am against authenticity, it's just nice to take a break from sureality from time to time. DId that make any sense? Is sureality a word?
Anyway, I wont be wearing my uniform either.

Mike Pratt, if I were a
Mike P, if I were a visitor then the first few posts would have made me wonder (the comments about uniforms, volley firing, and civil war tactics).
I am visiting North Carolina right now because my sister just had a baby and my brother in law, Sgt. Leslie is home from Iraq on leave.
Anywyay, he visited this site yesterday for the first time and was the one who asked me about if reenactors had paint ball reenactments after reading some of this thread.
So I wrote what I wrote before from a vistior's perspective. Not picking on you cause your captain. (evil grin)
Still, it would be cool if a paintball tournament was planned. It will be interesting to see where the equipment will come from. And I agree Mike J, it would be fun to do more traditional paint ball and throw authenciticity standards out for the day.
I'll probably bring up the live firing thoughts and idea in another thread. I would personally love to see it happen. I've heard that some of y'all are some fine shots.

Charge bayonets!
Have you guys figured out how bayonet charges will be handled? I forsee something like that Monty Python skit where the old ladies of the church were reenacting the Battle of Britain, Waterloo, etc.
I got it, a paintbrush duct taped to the end of the paintball gun, that's just the ticket.

Paintball Anyone?
I guarantee
...that if a company started manufacturing period looking weapons that could safely fire paint balls then you would see people lined up in droves to reenact everything from the first uses of matchlocks to Custer's Last Stand. Just imagine how different the reenactments would be without the ubiquitous "bulletproof" reb or yankee. Not having to shout across the field, "I GOT YOU"...and hear back, "YOU MISSED!"....hard to argue with a big blaze orange splotch of paint in the center of your chest! ahhh...to dream....

and now as we all ponder my vaguaries and mikes surealities, basic gear is fairly inexpensive if broken down into small segments...you dont have to run out and get the $300 Tippman with the cyclone feed hopper(though it does look really cool and resembles an HK-MP5) for the parttime enthusist the Wal-mart variety will do just fine and the gun can cost as little as $60 and the mask $25 then the tank and the hopper. what kind of schedule looks good for the bulkor to get stuff in order are we looking at a fall cookoout that might have paintball?

CW Paintball
Mike,
I'm in. Plus I have a friend (or two) who may be interested. One of them has extra guns and masks. If people were willing to float some cash his way for air he would be more than willing to lend people gear for the day. All we need now is a place to play.

How much room
How much room do we need? I have 7 acres (rectangle shape) of woods with a nice bit of wetlands in the middle....but....it is near Bangor. The only plus is it is covered by the Unit policy.
Will
there is about 7 acres
there is about 7 acres behind our house with additional woods for miles till you hit clearwater...step in big water ,go too far.
but I have good geographic boundries. you stub your toe you can sue me but there aint much hope of anyone getting anything...remember this is a gathereing of friends that just happen to be civil war renactors....just now have to set a dade and whos bringing the potato salad....HA!

Not much room is needed
My paintball experience tells me one very important thing...with only a handful of guys you really don't need much more than 1 acre. If you have hundreds of people then by all means 7 acres would be great but 8 to 10 guys won't take up much space. If you have too much land and not enough guys you spend a long time just looking for each other. When I have played in the past once you are hit you are out of the game. Once the paint balls start flying each game usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. I'm sure a Civil War tactical would take even less time...
