While Lauren and I were away this weekend we stopped at the Mr. Paperback in Belfast this morning to kill some time waiting for Reny's to open. I stumbled upon "Civil War Historian Magazine" which by the claim on the front page 'Rated #1 Magazine for bringing the Civil War to life.' So, I picked it up and fell in love as flipped through the full color pages and payed the cashier and brought it home.

This issue is their second year, first issue and is along the lines of Camp Chase Gazette and about the same price ($26). There is an article on the devastation at Beauvoir, (Reenacting) Life in the Petersburg Trenches, The Pioneer Brigade and more.

Very exciting find, however in checking out their website, the editor has just resigned so they are experiencing a bump in road now. I hope that is all it is for them as I am initially very impressed with the magazine's overall quality and hope to subscribe.

at the 140th Cedar Creek I was given a handout by a guy hawking them for the mag.....Problem was he would see me everywhere and still try to give me another...It became a running joke that I was everywhere he was going...It looks from the flyer that It was going to be a good read.....but I already have two subscriptions to two mags already...

I have to second Marc's endorsement of CWH. I feel so strongly that I would say that if you could only subscribe to one CW reenacting mag, CWH would be the one.

The articles are so far above CCG in thoroughness, research and accuracy, that there is really no comparison.

The articles deal with day to day aspects of military and civilian life at the time of the CW, and anyone who is serious about developing their impression should get hold of a copy and decide for themself if it is worth the subscription price. It also has great reviews and studies of museums, actual civil war relics, and coverage of reenactments.

CWH has become a standard reference item in my CW library.

CWH

Yes, there was some speculation last fall/winter that changes in editors would mean a drop in quality, or even that the mag was going to go under because the publisher was not making as much money as he thought he would. Those theories don't seem to have much credibility now.

their full color format

their full color format really highlights the events and stories that they have in the mag. points are well illustrated and you can get a feel for things....that the Camp Chase with an idea to the period and cheaper one color text couldnt convey.

CCG

I think CCG has slipped so much over the years they will have a tough time. Then again, they are trying to be all things to all people and circulation and sales is the bottom line, not quality and authenticity.
