In celebration of Black History Month 2006, the answer is B. Private Sam Ashe killed the first Union officer of the war, Major Theodore Winthrop who was a famous abolitionist. This was at the battle of Big Bethel.

Jefferson Davis called this battle one of the most significant engagements of the war between the states. A company of Texans, forty-four strong called the Davis guards (company F of the 1st Texas Heavy Artillery) soundly defeated a large Union invasion force of seventeen vessles and four thousand Federals that were headed up the Sabine River to invade Texas. Lieutenant Downling and his men sunk two of these vessels and captured over two hundred of the Federals with no casualties of their own. The victory was so complete offering further proof of Southern invincibility that the men if the Davis Company received the only Confederate Medals of Honor issued during the war. (These were made from Mexico coins.) One was sent to Jefferson Davis, who the men had great admiration for. This was the most lop sided victory of the war.

Hancock, hero of Gettysburg ran for president on the Democrat ticket but it was said America was getting weary of Civil War hero presidents. Also, there was a big movement in favor of Lee becoming president. However, Lee himself was not in favor of this position. And him not being a citizen of the U.S. also was an issue.
