You might start at the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors database.

Can you share the info with us? You never know what we might turn up when we have some time and a little info.

Dear Mz Annie ~ I'd be glad to help you search for him if you send me data to keepupthefight@aol.com if you don't want to just stick it out here.
The above suggestion is a great place to start, plus just Google for his name with quotes around it and add "civil war" in separate quotes at the same time. Thru' the years, I've added some subscription sites, so would be more than happy to make use of them to locate your man.
Was never much interested in the Civil War Navy until I saw a thingie on the History Channel about remnants of large balls that had 32 small balls inside being found in Duncan Field, Shiloh; and since they were too large to have come from canon, it's now suspected that a Naval Captain down on the Tennessee River found an angle where he could fire rounds with delayed fuses that bounced over the hillside and were what kept the Rebs sleep-deprived over the night of the 6th April...exploding over their heads about every fifteen minutes.

Annie,
Send me his name.
I have a copy of all the Navy records & dispatchs from the War.
I should be able to do a simple search to find his name.

The part about the Rebs not sleeping is true.
But bouncing 9" & 10" shells off a dirt bank covered
with union soldiers is bunk. The guns of the USS Tyler and
USS Lexington could easily elevate to clear the river bank.

Wouldn't be the first time I heard something amiss on the History Channel, Andy ~ I tho't the bouncing was kinda strange, too; but since I'd never heard anything about Navy involvement at Shiloh other than transporting troops & supplies, I plopped myself down with my chin in my palms to pay special attention.
Did they keep from shelling their own troops by specific intelligence? Cool that someone can correctly update the facts cuz I tried to tell my husband about this as his dad was the only family sailor we know of!

Judy,
Seems Grant knew the Navy was there in the river,
that's why he withdrew to that spot.
The Navy had been in the area of Pittsburgh Landing
a month previous, scouting the river further upsteam.
It's amazing how much history is left out.

Andy ~ I actually went Google-ing to see what pictures I could find on Civil War ships and stumbled into this one as it was labelled to be something else:

I'll have to go looking for this marker next time I'm in Tennessee ~ sure never knew the Navy had been to Shiloh a month before the Army got there!

See what happens when you let the Army write the history books.
Things get lost in translation.
