Parade dress?

What is standard dress for the parade? I imagine coat, leathers, etc -is knapsack required? How about red blanket? Greatcoat or poncho?

When I came back form Norlands I took my musket apart for a thorough winterizing cleaning, then it occurred to me that I would bring it to the parade! Oh, well, you can't clean your musket too much, I guess - I was told that the newbies have new, clean clothes and dirty pieces -but the old hands have old, dirty clothes and sparkling guns.

Heavy Marching Order Usually

Hi Tom, I won't be able to make the Parade this year. I imagine that someone will clarify if i am wrong but the Third usually performs in parades in heavy marching order. That means all the traps you can hang off yourself. :) Basically what we normally drill with plus a knapsack or blanket roll. Your red blanket would be visible. I usually go with my knapsack. But others will create a blanket roll to sling over their left shoulder and hang down to their right side.

The knapsack requires something in it to maintain a body and shape. So that means some weight is required. Whereas a blanket roll is usually just the blanket and is therefore not much weight.

As to old hand, dirty uniform, sparkling rifle, I don't know if I subscribe to that. My uniform is dirty when it needs to be and sparkling when it's appropriate. My rifle however, has a patina to it but it never mis-fires.

portland vets day parade

Details about the parade will be included in the November Third Maine newsletter, for those who are "subcribers". Mike Johnson has the basic dress info correct..heavy marching order (blanket rolls or knapsacks), all leathers, canteen, haversack. Will also need some rounds and caps as the unit will be firing ceremonial volleys at City Hall during the program Andrews Post in Portland is hosting the event, and from what I have seen, they have the whole thing lined up already. My guess is that no last minute entries will be accepted. All who wish to participate as Federals are welcome to march with the Third, as usual.

Vets Day Parade

Craig sounds like it was a great turn out. Today I spoke with my 23 year old daughter on the phone. She had just marched in "her" first veterns day parade. Made tears stream down my face as my baby told me how proud she was that she had served in the Navy but she told me one thing that made my heart swell. She told me with a quiver in her little voice how proud she was of me her mother for always teaching her courage and the right God, Country, Family. I wish I had the courage that that little girl had when she left the farm in Kentucky and entered a mans world to fight for what she believes was a just cause. To all you men of the military past present and future you have my love and prayers forever. I am deeply greatful for all that has been given for the victory that has been gained.
