Norlands requested that the 3rd Maine do a living history encampment on Oct. 22, and the unit voted to do the one-day event. We will be setting up a bivouac-style camp and along with doing the usual demonstrations, portray a company on the march that has stopped for the day. We will also be having a unit meeting. Anyone who wants to participate, military and civilian, is welcome to join us. This includes Rebels but there will be no skirmish and participants should plan to support our "on campaign" portrayal. No A-tents, flies, iron for the fire pit, or modern food in the camp, etc. There will probably be some civilian scenarios. Carolyn Lawson (clawson@bates.edu) is the unit contact for the event. If you come, Seamus, we could hold you prisoner, a captured straggler picked up along the road!

So exactly how the wearers of the grey and butternut will fit in is unclear to me. I agree completely Craig, but I would like to point out that the invitation to Confederates was implied in Glen Lawson's post of September 28, 2005 at 10:12am. The first reply to Seamus' post. Some might even say the invitation was explicit.
Just my opinion:
Sorry, but all this communication stuff is new to the operation of each unit's events.
I suggested that only the unit president can 'speak' officially for a unit and the event contact should provide information/invitations. Therefore, I believe that Glen's comments may be open to interpretation but he was very clear that one should contact Carolyn Lawson if interested in this event.
I still believe that good reenacting manners would be to respect each units' events and request an invite if an individual or a unit is interested in participating in that event.
Is it fair to Norlands to have a lot reenactors and their units just show up without being asked? Can any member of this Forum make an 'official' invite on behave of their unit to an event? What is an official invite? Will other units post their events on this Forum if it means that they will lose control of their own events? Many questions as we all experience this brave new world of communication.
