Annual Haunted Fort Knox is looking for Volunteers to help with the activities. In years past the event was small and could be manned by 6 people but in recent years it has grown to such proportions that it requires a platoon to manage. Thousands of visitors come through the halls of horror each night. The imposing granite works are so scary to some that they literally don’t get past the sentries at the front gate.
Due to multitude of visitors, Volunteers are needed to greet parties entering the fort. Guides are needed to escort them around the various chambers and tunnels. Volunteers are needed for Security to make certain people don’t go where they shouldn’t, for crowd control and parking. Of course there is always a need for spooks, apparitions, ghouls, goblins and vampires.
The Dates are October 21-22 and October 28-29, tentatively two nights each weekend. Accommodations will be in the officer quarters by roaring fire places. Tentatively, meals provided for those who pre-register. Not an event for the coward! If you are afraid of Ghosts…Stay away!

Thanks
Thanks Mike I made corrections to the dates. The first weekend dates are still tentative and hopefully they will have the volunteers for that weekend too. I had pledged to volunteer both weekends but the last information I had (from Monday), were considering cancelling the first weekend. I will have more concrete information by October 8th.

Fright Night CANCELLED
I have just come back from a meeting with Mr. Price (fitting name eh!) from Fort Knox. The Fright Night activities are officially cancelled!
There are a lot of reason behind the cancellation but most center around heighten safety concerns because of the on going issues with the Friends of Fort Knox Association.
They will hold a children's event from 1-5 on October 29th. I will update the list of activities once the schedule is firmed up.
A number of people have volunteered from the Re-enacting community, the Friends of Fort Knox thanks you for your support and hopes that you will be able to attend the childrens event. They would still like the support and assistance. I have submitted the names of the people and units who had step forward and volunteers. I would like to personally thank folks from the following units for their support.
29th Georgia Infantry
4th Maine Infantry
15th Alabama Infantry
3rd Maine Infantry
3rd Arkansas Infantry
In all there were 26 individuals who stepped forward to support the cause. It is hopeful that many of these folks plus some, will be able to assist with the Children's event. I'll have more as the event draws nearer.
Yours,
Will Cotton Gillway

What's the latest?
Hey Will,
I see the website still lists this weekend and next for Fright at the Fort. I, unfortunately, can't help out but was curious about what the latest gossip is? Anything you can pass along?
Thanks,

Thats unfortunate, but are
Thats unfortunate, but are they worried that one of the twentith might be a suicide bomber? sounds like an excuse from the bigger higher ups...from what Ive heard about this its an unfortunate occurance with potential wrong coming from both sides, ultimatums end compromise. so there is an impasse and nothing gets done.....I take it a new director has either been found or the search continues, which is it? I wont be able to go on the 29th now as some things have cropped up at my mothers house that need to be done before winter sets in...Ive got to stack hay around the house and get some plastic up for the windows....any volunteers to help and I will pay you with a dark frothy liquid.......

At an expense
At an expense of being verbally accosted again, I will give MY VIEWS on the situation and from first hand information.
The Fright at the Fort has been cancelled for a number of reasons. One is a security concern. I have been told that the Friends Fort Knox have recieved several threats including some from fellow re-enactors.
Second, These threats have created havoc in several communities around the Fort. Searsport High had it's students involved but pulled the student support due the safety and ugliness of the situation.
Finally, The big dilemma...do you take the chance with threats that nothing was going to happen. We think about this one as a no brainer, of course nothing is going to happen. Well, we evacuate schools every time there is bomb threat knowing that the probabilities are remote. So re-thinking...how serious do we take threats when it comes to peoples safety. The terrorist won out I guess.
Just how ugly is this situation. Well, soon after I posted for voluteers for this event, Mr. Price was contacted by a member of a boycotting unit to explain who "I" was and questioning the 29th GVI insurance liability leaving Mr. Price with the impression that we did not have insurance and were a liability to the Fort. This member was also a "hostile" member of the Friends of Fort Knox.
I want to get my position clarified. I don't necessarily agree or disagree with the main issue of the feud at the Fort over who was fired. I see it more as a personal issue that was politicize for personal gain. There are laws and courts to separate and rule on such issues. As I understand it, the Board of Directors of the Friends of Fort Knox voted and there was a simple majority that voted to fire an employee. The Four Directors who were against the firing, began to protest and even went as far as forming a new group called the "True Friends of Fort Knox." As bout as trite as you can be with a name...kind of reminded me of the splinter terrorist group calling themselves the "Real IRA", when Sein Fein began the Peace Accord talks.
The really disgusting thing about this is that fact that the fight is mainly about the rich and wealthy. (Again an OPINION!) Think about it, if had been the poor volunteer slob who was manning the gate all summer that got fired by the BOD, because he did something that ticked off 6 of the 10(just an example not factual) BODs; do you really think anyone would have paid attention. Do you think this poor slob could influenced corporations and contributors to pull their support from the Fort? Why should the former director get special treatment over the regular employee?????? Because he as the $$$$$$ do so.
Yes, I do have some strong opinions of the situation but my opinion are no more right or wrong than the next persons. In the end, we should either support the Fort or stay away. Whether the politics are right or wrong, it is just plain wrong to do harm to the overall goals and mission of the fort and it's programs. How the "True Friends" have gone about this process is wrong and has damaged the reputation of the Fort's current adminstration. This organization was set up to serve the Fort and the public. At present it has not been shown that they did not act in good faith when they took the actions to dismiss Mr. Seymour. If there is any proof that there has been, then this needs to be addressed in a formal setting without making it political.
To answer the question about the hiring of a new director, there are 12+ applications. The process is on hold until after a ruling is decided whether it be by the membership or by the court system on whether Mr. Seymour was dismissed unjustly. Sounds like they are acting responsibly to me.

Now I'm sorry I asked. I'm
Now I'm sorry I asked. I'm also sorry that civilized people have devolved to the point that a darn fine fund raiser has been cancelled.
My best to you, Will, and the 29th GA...

A more up-beat up date
I talked with Mr. Price Wednesday and am please to announce that the Childrens Day is moving along very well. He has made so requests of the Re-enactor community to assist with various tasks which includes setting up some tents and doing some tours and well as programs with children involvement. We are working on details.
It is very important that as many re-enactors attend if only for an hour if possible. Though Mr. Price has not recieved an official boycott letter from the 20th Maine as Wednesday, several members of that unit have been in contact with him about the boycott. This had demoralized the adminstration but it was successfully countered by the Civil War community of whom 27+ volunteered to help out. A list was generated and given to Mr. Price the units involved listed in a previous post.
The happenings....We will be camping out in the Officer's Quarters on Friday night. Note this will be by advanced invitation only. If I have you on the list you are covered but please confirm as we will provide meals for only the people coming. I would suggest bringing a cot and sleeping bag. We will have use of the fire places but the rooms can remain cold for some time. We do not have to be in uniform for the overnight but dress warm and comfortable. We will discuss duties and assignments that evening.
More information will be provide next week as the event draws closer.
Will
My two cents...
For what it's worth might I put in that the 29th is helping at the kids day to support THE FORT. You know, that structure of granite blocks and mortar that has stood far longer than any of us have been here? THE FORT, not the politics surrounding it right now.THE FORT, not the director be he past, present or future.THE FORT, not the board of directors past, present or future. Just THE FORT. The venerable structure itself. And yes, one other selfish reason. I happen to delight in the joy of children and the children's day event for Halloween promises to be something THE CHILDREN will enjoy. So can we just get past the politics and join as a community to support something that benefits us all, re-enactors and public alike? ~Miss Patti

If it's an consolation
If it's any consolation Miss Patti, I never doubted any other motive from either you, Will or the 29th Ga. It's just too bad others wouldn't put the Fort and the children ahead of whatever motivation they are opperating on.

the Fort
I shell be there on the 29th with my trusty steed. If that is possible Captain... And to burn some powder. It been to long since I've heard a cannon fire.
Fort
I will be there with bells on my skirts
All is well that ends well Copperheadannie
Nightmare on Fort Street
There are many individual reasons to support or not to support the Fort but Patti has pretty much nailed the reasons to do it.
The rest is petty politics.
Over the past 24 hours I have recieved some fiery e-mails preaching fire and brimstone to all that attend. (a slight exaggeration but I was told clearly that the current adminstration is evil) At the risk of offending fellow Druids and Pagans, this all comes together in time for Halloween. Kind of fitting in an odd way.
I have been assured that Re-enactors are still wanted at the Fort and that the support is greatly appreciated.

Sounds spooky... Should
Sounds spooky...
Should bring wooden (tent) stakes and garlic too in the haversack?
Thank you Mike
I'm glad to see no one jumped down my throat on that. I did have my concerns. But the day will be a short one & we should all come through it with smiles.
No Marc, I don't think you'll need garlic. Unless you think you'll be attacked by a lasagna. I have it on good authority that the only vampires there should be mini ones & they can be warded off with candy. Of course if you have CHOCOLATE in your haversack you might be attacked by me & CopperHead Annie. :-) Fair warning.~Miss Patti
