Im looking for 2 things
First,Im looking for an active link, address or phone number for the sutler Finishing Touches...most links I found off of various sites were off line...I bought a dress...oh uh my identical twin sister (soldiers dont wear dresses...)bought a dress...yeah..thats it... and did not have time to go to Orwell and pick it up
Second, after reading about some poor souls brogans blowing up..my own 18th c. shoes are in dire need of repair...self bailers they be right now, and I tried looking for (ok spent the better part of 2 hours)the cobler in Augusta...no such luck.Could someone be of assistance with clearer directions?
And Ive also gotten a referral to Shoe Renew in Brunswick..are they still in operation?
Thank you kindly for any info anyone can pass on.

Brogans and an address

Teddy,
I remember not even ten years ago, seeing many shoe repair shops.
Now there are next to none where I have seen them. Bangor had the Yankee Shoe Repair but a fire in Masonic Building put him out of business for a while. (who goes to Bangor anyway! lol) I'll check and see if this guy has reopened at all. He was very good and had done a number of shoes for my old unit years ago.
Good news is I have the information for Finishing Touches. Jvpr1861@hotmail.com I can give you a phone number but will have to do that by e-mail. Good luck.

Tom Finn shoe repair is

Tom Finn shoe repair is right on water street in augusta...Now weather I would recomend him is another thing...He resoled my cowboy boots and it took him a while to get to me that they were done...they were done in two weeks but he never got around to calling me to tell me they were ready, and after I got the boots It hasent been a year and they have holes worn through again...Note Ive had these boots for about 15 years and this was the first time they were resoled....Also I had the brogan discussion with him and he doesnt wood peg them, so if they get resoled they will be swewn, not pegged....
Ive been meaning the try the leather shop in Waterville, almost in the center of town heading out twords oakland right near the offices of Nale and Nale, Attys.

Waiting for shoe repair

" He resoled my cowboy boots and it took him a while to get to me that they were done... "

Actually, that is typical of a shoemaker of ANY period.

I remember an old joke - A young fellow drops a pair of shoes off to be repaired. He then walks down the street into the Army recruiting office, joins the Army and is immediately shippied off to the Phillipines, fights for a few years, comes back, get married, raises a family, and after many years, retires. Going through some old stuff he finds the long-forgotten shoe repair ticket. On a lark, he goes to where the shop was, and sure enough, the shop is still there, and the grizzled, much older shoemaker is still behind the bench.

He says: "I dropped these shoes off years ago, and just happened to find the ticket. You don't still have them by any chance, do you?"

The shoemaker looks at the ticket and goes in back of the shop. He comes out and hands the ticket back to the customer.

"They'll be ready next Thursday."

Glossy Finish

I can't imagine a glossy finish lasting too long with the kind of use we put them through! :) I look forward to your report as I will need my pair resoled over the winter.

I think Shoe Renu is still in Brunswick. If I get a chance I'll pop in there and chat with them sometime.

Yankee Shoe Repair

The gent from Bangor who used to own Yankee Shoe Repair works with me and he is not going to reopen. He is however toying with the idea of doing the "old style" shoe repair as a way to make afew extra bucks and keep the old ways alive. I'll keep you posted.

Yep you arent the only

Yep you arent the only one....Ive got a length of bailing twine wrapped around my right foot(brogan) it really looks authentic but lacks a certain degree of safety..as grass gets stuck in the openings and tends to slow me down...I doubt I will find anyone who can wood peg it but at this point I dont care...Fixed brogans are a plus!
