Ok, someone tell me what happened in this past weekends episode. I got caught up with the premieres on the SciFi Channel on Friday night, John Wayne's "Island in the Sky" Saturday night and John Wayne's "High and the Mighty" on Sunday night. Missed "Into the West completely"!

So can someone fill me in? Only one episode left, will it be worth seeing it out tot he end?

John Wayne

Mike,
I got back from Deep River CT Fife and Drum's Parade & Muster on Sunday at 7:pm. Hot, wet, and my ears were still ringing with the fife & drum music. I too finished my weekend with John Wayne, so can someone fill us in on episode 5?

PS... Mike,
are you attending Fort Knox? It appears to be a great Living History program. The 3rd Maine is planning to participate in the parade on Saturday and in the fort to demonstrate company drill, Guard Mount, Town Ball, and may be a skirmish drill.
Hope that you can join us there,
Craig

relocating

I need all the help I can get to get up and running after my move to Maine the first of August. I need a unit to be active with so if any one has any interest please let me know. If some one could let me know when and where events are and if you need any help with anything I would be up for it. Thanks Laurie

Greetings Laurie,
You can check the Third Maine web site . We are a family unit in the Portland - Lewiston area which is a Union living history unit. The 20th Maine is another Federal unit which is located in the Bangor area. You can also try either the 15Ala or the 29th Georgia for Confederate reenacting units.

20th Maine Country

Copperheadannie,
A hearty pre-welcome to the State of Maine. I see that you will be moving to the Northern section. While certainly no group in this state will turn you away, you will be best served by the closer units in the state. The region you are moving to, consists primarily of the membership of the 20th Maine and 29th Georgia. We have a booklet about the memberships and units in Maine. Once you get settled, please contact me and I will get a copy to you. Have a safe trip up.

into the west............

Wellllll let me tell you of a story of a man named jed.....
No really it seemed a gut named custer went to grab all the glory and rode down upon the indians and then had to run away f-troop style up to the hill where they were surrounded by indians and killed...No one real bit of detail in how it got that way just ride to battle and be overwhelmed....no skirmish lines falling apart just a bunch of horsemen riding along shooting....oh and the Wheeler who was a scout was killed(?) last I saw of him he had been shot ofn his horse and was being poked with sticks by indian women while he muttered.."not like this.....not like this"
The young blond wheeler shot two bushwackers with his long barrel quigly sharps....and fought slightly with the wife...thay had lost a child and the old whos fault is it was going on behind the scenes..they made up and went out to Pennslyvania to help teach the Indian children how to make it in the white mans world, a project created by one Capt. PRATT....any relation I dont think so but do I have any resemblance to the carridines...?
well it seems Clara and her husband left the school since IT wasent up their alley and a young indian with a defiant streak has learned to use the typewriter..
Now the further editorial...those indian schools were brutal places yet in this instant they kind of sugarcoat it...the batttle of the little bighorn looked more like the 140th Gburg cav presentation with indians insted of rebs.
last episode...,,,I guess we are going to wind things up with wounded knee.....I wonder if they will be using breachloading cannons?

For seamus

Seamus thanks for the help. The web page you sent is still being worked on. You can contact me at Copperheadannie2@Yahoo.com. Every day I wake up here in TN and it is somewhere between 1818 and 1865 in my dress and my manner. I am the wife of Gen. Jackson and work in thier home the Hermitage. Reenacting is my life every day. Matter of fact life would not be much for me with out it. That is why I do not want any time to pass when I get to Maine to get involved. Thanks for you help. Looking forward to it. "Your visions will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams, who looks inside awakes" Carl Young

For Maj Reeder

Not only the home of Andrew Jackson. But home to Capt Sammy Jackson CSA and home of Brig.Gen. Andrew Jackson 111 CSA. I am General Jackson's wife Rachel for the Hermitage and also work full time in the home as a reenactor and guide

Well in THAT case

You definately would feel right at home at the Norlands-Washburn Museum in Livermore... It's a costumed/ 1850s? period working farmstead.

its all Predictable........

You know unfortunately, with our culture so bent twords telivision and the entertainment industry, how can we not see things coming? its the trip there that is important now...though I didnt see the shooting of adama on BSG coming and I was definately schocked in the season ender of NAVY CIS....a crainial shot to the woman dead center of the forhead was a complet surprise....I didnt see the twist coming in the "crying game" and I dont think "the blair witch project" was all that scary.....I thought it was a good info film on what not to do while camping......
"into the west" we knew the stories but this was from a different perspective and at times it was interesting but then it got to the point of look at the bad white men fighting over their gold and look how they steal... but at no time did they ever point to anything of a positive nature after 1850 say......

"Into the West"

It is wrong to view the past with an eye that is rooted in the present. As reenactors, we try to understand the past by placing ourselves there. TV viewers can not understand our history with out doing some reading on the subject.

Viewing the past

Craig that is so true one sits outside of history and it is hard not to make judgments without being blinded by the present time. I deal with the slavery issue 40 to 50 hours every week. It takes alot of study and book time to know how and what was felt with any of the issues of the past. I think it is very important to present any issue in the time in which it is being reenacted. CopperHeadAnnie

Studies upon studies

Copperheadannie,
It is so true that it is important to read about the time period to understand any issue dealing with the impressions. Next month a group of us will be heading down to Gettysburg for a living history encampment presentation in Pitzer's Woods. I believe some of our Yankee friend did the same this spring. One of the things they cautioned us on was that they did not want 1st impressions. This makes me wonder!
Back to topic sort of....
I do ocassionally do a western impression and cowboy action shooting. I can attested that there was no way there were that many gun fights in the short time spans between individuals. The amount of time it took to care for the guns and maintain them in this modern era is unreal let alone back then. I guarantee there were more misfires and malfunctions than you ever see on TV. It's no wonder they carried knives! If any one doubt this, then we'll have to get together and I'll let you fire my conversions and see how many shots you get before you have to clean up.
Thus far I have missed every episode.

Units near Bangor Maine

Hi - am brand new to the reinactment community but have always been a fanatic for the Victorian period and Civil War. Is there a group anywhere near Bangor, Maine?

Hey Captn Pratt, I thought

Hey Captn Pratt, I thought that the "baby arm" at Knox last season was damn tasty!

Welcome to the new girls by the way! I reenact out of Florida and can only make it up to Maine in short burst, but I can tell you that the reenactors in Maine I consider to be family, and I am sure that you will feel the same very quickly!

PS I cant say anything about into The West sorry!
