The organizing group met today and spent several hours discussing the future event. The ideas shared should make for a grand event. I wont give anything away today. It's too early for anything concrete. But I would like to describe the terrain that I saw today and give everyone an idea of what the possibilities could be.
Along the modern road there are a series of fields split apart by a brook with very wet, soft banks. As you move away from the road the fields are broken up by strips of woods. The largest field is the first you pass. And is formed by a long slow slope up to a ridge at the edge of a strip of woods seperating it from another field. There is a tote road running up one side of this large field that continues deep into the forest.
As you continue on the modern road you cross over the brook and come upon a smaller series of fields. There is also a tote road running past this field and into the forest.
These tote roads are wide enough to advance colunms of four in most places. And the main tote roads travels quite some way into the land available to us. From this road there are a number of side roads, trails and paths.
Most of the forest is open and easily passable. With views of good distance possible along many avenues. There is a good deal of deadfall on the ground but little undergrowth.
The whole area is cris-crossed by stone walls from an era when these woods were probably fields. Some of the stone walls are still in good shape and quite serious natural breastworks that may be taken advantage of or to be contended with.
Other natural outcrops of large boulders are scattered about, like most of Maine.
The wet area up the center of the property has several easy ways to ford but no bridges. Forcing these fords or making the march around them will be decisions that the field commanders will be gambling the whole day upon.
There is roughly 400 acres of total land available to us. The exact break down of woods and fields and water is not known to me but if I had to guess from the small piece I saw today then I would guess that I saw ten to fourteen acreas of fields. The rest is wooded or wet.
There is a great deal of potential for a tactical. Now we just need to put the numbers together to enjoy it.
Visit the official event website for specific info. There is growing excitment on the MaineMilitia.com - Forum. Join in for all the chatter.
