The Sentinel Online has a story about cannon being restored in Hallowell. The cannon will be returned to High Street soon, next to the what is known as the Old Powder House. The article reports that the cannon was purchased in 1839 by four businessmen from Hallowell and brought back to the city. And that it was originally one of the guns taken from the capture of HMS Boxer by the USS Enterprise.
As is usual when I read some of these stories, I could not find enough details to satisfy my curiosity. I was under the impression that the guns from the Boxer had gone on to a local privateer that was captured by the British. A Wikipedia article on the Boxer has a similar story but no reference to a better source online. Nor do I recall the source of my impression. Of course it's possible not all the guns went to the Hyder Ali, of course.
And without a picture I have no other evidence to go by but find myself skeptical.
Still, it's great that someone is restoring the cannon and will be preserved for many years to come.
