Miss Rose - Here are a few tidbits on the Confederate Sharpshooters to chew on:
In April 1862 the Confederate Congress passed an act to organize battalions of sharpshooters:
“SECTION 1. The Congress of the Confederate States of America do enact, That the Secretary of War may secure to be organized a battalion of sharpshooters for each brigade, consisting of not less than three nor more than six companies, to be composed of men selected from the brigade or otherwise, and armed with long-range muskets or rifles, said companies to be organized, and the commissioned officers therefore appointed by the President, by and with the advice, and consent of the Senate. Such battalions shall constitute parts of the brigades to which they belong, and shall have such field and staff officers as are authorized by law for similar battalions, to be appointed by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate.”
The ANV didn’t really start fielding sharpshooters in great numbers until 1863. (Robert Rhodes was one of the pioneers in the field, forming a unit in early 1863 that was used in action at Gettysburg.) When the authorization was made for these units they were formed for the most part from the existing infantry regiments. Each brigade thus fielded its own Battalion of sharpshooters made up of a percentage of each company of each regiment (Something like 1/12) with total strength of around 200 men.
By late 63/early 64, the ANV fielded some very effective units that were more like shock troops than snipers. Don’t confuse these troops with the Union Sharpshooters; in fact, the Confederate sharpshooters were a different breed. Reading of Major Dunlop’s ‘seine netting’ maneuvers capturing entire Union picket lines without loosing a man is amazing. Lee made it mandatory for each brigade to form a battalion-sized unit in early 64.
These men would train together in marksmanship, range estimation and for primary duties as pickets, scouts, skirmishers and flank guards and thus would be exempt from normal fatigue and watch standing duties. They would camp, march and fight with their companies, but would fall out when called upon to deploy the brigade sharpshooters.
These men were identified by special badges on their uniforms - these small marks of identification allowed for easier passage through the picket lines so they would not to be confused for shirkers or stragglers. Several of these badges have been identified through the usual sources, but only one known example survives - the 2nd MD Battalion Sharpshooters.
The Army of TN fielded sharpshooters as well, but they were not employed quite the way the ANV did.

Sharpshooters
"Shock Troops of the Confederacy" is a great read. Definitely one of the best books on the subject.
Sharpshooters
My Dear Mr. Backus~
Thank you for your information. May I assume since you are well versed in the proper book that you are also well versed in the subject matter?
I have spoken with Marc and am posing the question to you as well. Would you be interested in taking on this role for the Battle At Fort Knox (I am assuming you have heard of it). I am with hopes of having a well represented Confederate Contigency with as many aspects represented as we can offer. Having CS Sharpshooters to do sceanrios off and on would add a tremendous amount of authenticity.
Please contact me so we may chat a bit.
Thank you again for your information.

HOLY HANNAH!!!
My Dear Marc~
So that you know, you are guilty for keeping me up way too late tonight. This reading material is outstanding! I wish my poor brain would retain more than it does.
I have posted to Tom B. about this as well. Maybe you two could come up with something? How cool would it be to offer CS Sharpshooters?
lalalalalalaaaaaaaa..... I wish I was in Dixie.... lalalalalala

Sharpshooters
Miss Rose,
What type of sceanrios do you have in mind? As Marc stated, Confederate sharpshooters operate different than federal sharpshooters.
Whatever I can do to help please feel free to ask.
sharpshooters
Marc, Tom,
i think miss rose has a good idea, we should get a mess together for the fort and fiqure on a CS sharpshooter impression. or even better yet, figure out a vignette we could do?
In my wildest dreams
My Dear Mr. Backus~
I fear Miss Rose is uneducated in the ways of teh CS Sharpshooters. In my wildest dreams, I had not seen such a wonderful opportunity for the event.
Seamus is my Confederate Commander for the event. May I have him contact you or you contact him? Perhpas others will like to join in and learn a new facet to the "hobby".. new and inventive ideas... that's how we will attract new folks and keep we older ones interested.
Ready to learn here!!!

feeling the vapors coming on
Gentlemen!
:::: fanning self:::: You are the best! Plain and simple! I needed a little shot of positive today, and you boys filled the doctor's orders!
Do you feel you can affectively pull this off? As long as it is accurate (if not a bit askew like the rest of the event), nothing "hokie".
BRING IT ON!!!!
Perhaps set up a meeting for you all. I can come if you'd like...or not. I am easy. As long as you fill me in on what it is you wish to do, so if it needs to be considered in the schedule, etc.
And if you need me to put out a call to the other confederates coming to see if any of them wish to join in, I can do that as well.
Excitedly yours,
~Miss Rose
Miss Rose - is there year
