U.S. Sharpshooters
Hey Travis,
So far I have not heard of anyone doing an impression of a U.S. Sharpshooter here in Maine. But there are people who do that impression. You might want to go to www.berdansharpshooters.com/ to find out more about the type of uniform and equipment you need and who to contact if you want to join their or another unit.
I know that looking from the sutlers the uniforms of the USSS are very expensive compared to the regular Union Army uniforms. The Sharps rifle runs around $800-900, and there is a lot of gear that goes along with the rifle.
Anyway hope this helps.
Sharpshooters
It is true the sharpshooter impression is pretty expensive. I was just wondering if there were any straglers out there that could form a new unit in Maine, but I too havn't been able to find anyone. I have been out of the hobby for four years, but I still have all my 1st ME Cav. gear. I thought I try something new for the 150th. But I think I will just add to my Cav. impression. I do know there are a few guys in Maine doing cav. (dismtd). Anyway thanks for the help!
Sincerely

No one in Maine is doing that but there should be. If I wasn't already dumping my money into my new 30th ME Red River Campaign unit, I'd be all about that. If you do decide to put it together let me know.

Yes, we have some Berdans in Maine!
My dear Travis~
I know of thres who are currently active in Maine. There may be more as my reach doesn't always touch everyone, but of three I am sure.
It is, indeed, a very expensive persoana, but one that needs more representation. We need to chat a bit!! :)
Til then,

Miss Rose,
My brother both have been doing 1st Maine Cav. but we have always wanted to do Co. D 2nd USSS, since they were formed in Maine. We've talked alot about it in the last week and we have decided to do it! Our goal is to be outfitted and ready by next years Norland's event! If you have any info on the other Mainers doing Berdans you can email me at pfdcam119@yahoo.com or you can reach me at 831-8042 (my cell). I look forward to our conversation!

Re: 3rd Ark
Miss Rose,
I believe we met at this years event at Norlands. I was living in the shanty area on the edge of camp.
Members of my unit are looking to put together a federal impression so we can galvanize if needed. We wanted to do a western theater unit because Maine units in the west are highly under represented. The 30th ME was comprised of survivors of the 10th ME after Gettysburg, along with veterans from other units and some fresh troops. The unit was raised for the soul purpose of the campaign. After the campaign they went to the defense of Washington.
It will give us a chance to put together a "dirt bag" federal impression.
This impression will be put together as quickly as my bank account will allow.....and as of right now I don't have much.

Tom,
Thanks for the comment! We're pretty excited about it! Any help at all would be great! I'm trying to find a book, but now I can't remember where I saw it or even what the name was. I do know it's about a soldier's account of his time in Co. D 2nd USSS. Thanks again for your comments!

Travis,
I did a little research and didn't come up with too much. What I did find however is the Maine State Archives have a bit of information you may find interesting including a picture of Capt. Jacob McClure, correspondences, rolls, ect. There doesn't seem to be and returns but that makes sense seeing they where US Regular unit.
The state of Maine is really great about sharring information so it would definitly be worth contacting them.
I hope this helps you
Too bad it wasn't
Too bad it wasn't Confederate Sharpshooters - It's a story that has come back to the surface in the past few years. I've done a lot of reading into them and have built my library accordingly. A few units portray them; some others include them as an impression - had the chance to fall in with some of them too. Very interesting subject matter.
